The academy’s spire pierced the storm clouds like a blade, the lightning cascading around the metal flag pole, but Elara didn’t care about the lightning. She cared about the boy chained in the dragon’s roost below.
Kael had been her rival since their first year, he had a sharp tongue and sharper wings when he flew with the storm drakes. Then one stolen kiss in the forbidden archives turned rivalry to fire. Now he was accused of stealing the Heart Ember, the crystal that focused the realm’s magic. The elders called it treason. Elara knew better. Kael would never betray the kingdom or let alone magic itself.
She slipped past the guards, heart hammering louder than thunder. The roost smelled of ash and iron. Kael hung from manacles forged of void-steel, blood streaking his silver hair. His eyes, storm-gray… always storm-gray, and they found hers instantly.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he rasped.
“Neither should you.” She knelt, fingers brushing the lock. It was enchanted, cold as death. “Who framed you?”
“The High Warden. He wants the Ember for himself, to bind the drakes forever, make them weapons.” Kael’s voice cracked. “He knows about us. Said if I confessed, he’d spare you.”
Elara’s throat went dry. The Warden had always watched them too closely, his smiles too thin. She’d dismissed it as jealousy. Now it was a curse.
She pulled the small vial from her cloak, the last drop of phoenix tear she’d stolen from the infirmary. It hissed against the manacles, melting them like wax. Kael dropped to his knees, grabbing her shoulders.
“Run. Take the Ember and fly south. The tear will buy you time.”
“No.” She pressed the vial into his palm. “We finish this together.”
Footsteps echoed, guards, the Warden’s voice barking orders. Elara drew her dagger, the one Kael had etched with their initials under the hilt. Kael stood, wings unfurling despite the pain, scales glinting like midnight.
The Warden burst in, eyes wild. “The Ember is mine!”
Elara lunged first, but Kael was faster. He tackled the man, wings shielding her as spells crackled. In the chaos, Elara spotted the Ember, pulsing on the Warden’s belt.
She snatched it while he was busy with Keal. Heat flooded her veins, visions flashing: the Warden’s betrayal, the drakes’ chains, a future where magic dies. And Kael, always Kael, choosing her over everything.
She slammed the crystal against the stone. Light exploded. The Warden screamed as his stolen power reversed, binding him instead.
When the glare faded, the roost was silent. Kael slumped against her, breathing hard. “You broke it.”
“I broke his hold.” She kissed him, fierce, desperate, tasting blood and victory. “The magic’s free now, and so are we.”
Outside, the storm broke. Dragons roared, unchained. Elara laced her fingers with Kael’s.
“Ready to fly?”
He grinned, weak but able. “With you? Always.”
They leaped into the dawn. Kael wrapped Elara in his arms as his wings caught the wind. Their hearts entwined as they flew, watching the world below rewrite itself in sparkles of a fading storm.
